English Soccer Betting: Finding Value This Weekend
After an international break packed full of World Cup qualifying excitement, the EPL is back this weekend and there are some fantastic clashes in store. Charlotte Cook takes a look at the current soccer odds in an attempt to find the best value.
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United
The late EPL game on Saturday sees champions, Manchester United, travel to Tottenham Hotspur, who have started the season in style but are yet to come up against a stern test in their quest to finish in the top four come May. United will surely provide such a test for the London side and they may just give them a cruel reality check in the process.
Spurs' current form and rejuvenation under manager, Harry Redknapp, is enough to see United's odds to win the clash standing at [2.36]. You should snap these odds up as quickly as possible because, as in all sports, psychology is likely to play its part in the proceedings at White Hart Lane.
The home side have not beaten Manchester United in 16 Premier League clashes and, to make matters worse, they have a similarly dismal historical record against the champions. Spurs have defeated United just 3 times in a total of 34 Premier League matches.
The visitors have experienced a stuttering start to the new campaign but this is nothing new and Sir Alex Ferguson will hope that an unconvincing but morale-boosting victory over Arsenal last time out will prove a turning point in their early season form.
The current betting activity on Betfair seems to show that bettors don't have a great deal of confidence in Manchester United keeping a clean sheet. In fact, the odds of the champions managing to prevent the Spurs strikers from hitting the back of the net are [3.35]. For this reason, it seems a safe bet to gain additional value from a United victory by backing the Over in the Over/Under 2.5. Goals Market at [2.04].
Wayne Rooney scored for England in their World Cup Qualifying clash against Croatia in midweek and he'll be looking to continue his fine run of goal scoring form for both club and country this season with a strong performance against Spurs. The striker has scored a total of four goals in his last four Premier League games against the London side.
Manchester City v Arsenal
The cheque book at Manchester City was wedged firmly open over the summer but, despite a plethora of high-profile signings, the large majority of soccer pundits expected the side to fail to live up to expectations during their early season clashes. Whilst City haven't exactly set the Premier League alight with their performances so far, they currently sit in fourth position in the league table with 9 points from 3 games.
Manchester City are the only team in the whole country yet to concede a goal and they have displayed efficient, if not exactly scintillating, attacking performances up front. Emmanuel Adebayor has started the season in fine form, scoring in all three games and he'll be desperate to prove a point to the club he left in less than harmonious circumstances this summer.
Arsenal, meanwhile, enjoyed a fantastic start to their league campaign but a disappointing, and undeserved, defeat to Manchester United in their last game exposed a long-standing lack of strength and aggression in midfield. Andrey Arshavin will be forced to sit out this game after aggravating an injury in midweek whilst on international duty and the loss of their creative playmaker may hit Arsenal particularly hard against a resolute City side.
Backing the draw at [3.45] looks like a good move for this match, as does siding with the Under in the Over/Under 2.5 Goals Market at [2.0].
