Poker Tips

Why you should always review sessions

When you first start playing poker, one of the most important aspects of improving rapidly is reviewing your sessions properly. Marcus Bateman explains more.

Since poker is a game with so much information, it is difficult to play at the same time as processing everything that's going on around you. This is why carefully reviewing your big hands from a session can really help you to improve quickly. So often in poker, what you do off the table is as important as what you do on it and this is particularly true when it comes to reviewing sessions.

Think of poker like a big puzzle, with you having the job of fitting in pieces that may initially have been missed. These pieces are so important because when you identify and understand them, your chances of picking up on what they mean in the future receive a big boost.

Let's say you review your hand histories from a lengthy session of playing solid, tight aggressive play, and notice that you seem to be losing with your big pairs on certain types of board. Even though in poker, each hand is unique, you can easily start to identify trends over time in how hands go. If you reckon a pattern is emerging about certain hands, try to begin piecing it all together to see what is going on and, if necessary, try to change it.

In some situations, you may well need to start trying a bit of pot control, while in others you may need to play more aggressively, or to get better at playing against certain player types. These are all difficult to establish in a given session when you first begin, and going through the key hands you play can help your game more so than any other main factor.
