Canada face tough uphill battle

The Betting Advantage looks at Canada's chances of advancing past the Germans today in the Olympic Ice Hockey competition.

Canada had been hoping to get the bye into the quarter-finals by winning their pool. However, it was team USA that accomplished this and Canada will have to take a longer, tougher route to capture their goal of a gold medal in Vancouver. The first step will be getting past Germany tonight.

Germany have had a tough time putting the puck in the net so far this tournament. They were shutout in their first two games, but did play well defensively against Sweden, losing just 2-0. The loss to Finland was more lopsided with the final mark being 5-0. Their third game of qualifying was a loss to Team Belarus 5-3. It was Germany that outshot Belarus 40-17 in that game.

Canada have reached this situation with a pair of wins. The first was an 8-0 blowout over Norway, while the second was a 3-2 shootout win over Switzerland. Their final game of the preliminary round was, of course, the 5-3 loss to the United States.

Looking ahead to tonight's game, Canada is a huge favorite. The best that you can do if you want to back Canada is to get them for 1.02 (-5000) on the money line. You can back them for a bit higher if you want to bet on Canada to win in regulation time. In that market, Canada can be backed for 1.04 (-2500).

I would advise you to stay away from these two bets or even lay Canada here. The bet that I like is backing the Germans +4.5 goals. I think that Germany will play well defensively and hold this game to under a five goal differential. You can back Germany in this market for even money 2.0 (evens). I think that this bet has a greater than 50% chance of coming in.
