NFL Betting Week 3: Miami Dolphins @ San Diego Chargers
Graham Lewis takes a look at the NFL odds for Sunday's clash between the Dolphins and the Chargers.
Still winless, the Miami Dolphins visit the San Diego Chargers on Sunday in what promises to be an exciting game, and possibly a very profitable one for bettors.
Monday night saw the Dolphins giving the Colts a lesson in possession. To fans' and neutrals' delight, the wildcat formation was back and working with amazing effect against the Colts defence. The performance was dazzling, but there was one thing missing: a win.
While running the ball there were few mistakes for the Dolphins; the problems came on important receptions. Long passes up-field were on target but not caught at clinch moments. Ted Ginn will need to have a better game and make those count if the Chargers are to be brushed aside. It would be interesting to see Davone Bess' performance further up the field. The short distance combination between him and Chad Pennington seems to be one that works really well.
It will be interesting to see if Miami bring out the wildcat quite so much. The Chargers defence will surly be preparing for it so as a result, we might not get to see so much of it. There are mixed feelings on the wildcat, but purely from a football fan's point of view, I love it!
The Chargers are now 1-1 but they have not played up to their full potential in either game. Oakland proved to be better than anyone expected and Baltimore were tough opponents, so this leaves a little to be learned about the Chargers and certainly not enough to give them such an advantage in the odds going into this game (Chargers are at [1.37] in the winner market at time of writing).
There are injury problems to look at with San Diego too. Jamal Williams is out for the season and Nick Hardwick requires ankle surgery, which will keep him off the field for a minimum of eight weeks. It is still unknown if LaDainian Tomlinson will be able to play. He missed last week's game with the ankle injury he picked up against the Raiders.
Miami have won the last seven match-ups against the Chargers. I fancy them to make that eight, but feel their weakness here is not their game, but the fatigue that might catch up with them after a Monday night game and the traveling they will have to do. Neither problem was unexpected, though, and you can count on Sparano to have come up with plans to counteract this.
On to the betting. As I said above I fancy Miami to win this, but with the odds looking the way they are there is no need to put a straight bet on. This will be a trade for me. I will take the early odds on Miami and then trade out during the game. There is quite a lot of scope for odds movement during play, so I would not be in a rush to trade out too soon if it looks like Dolphins have the run of play.
