NFL Preseason Betting: Finding the value with the Jets and the Ravens
The Betting Advantage gives his thoughts concerning NFL betting value ahead of the Monday Night game for Week 2 of the Preseason.
I know it's preseason but don't tell that to Rex Ryan, the new head coach of the New York Jets. Previous to that he was the defensive co-ordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. These two teams will not meet during the regular season so for Ryan this is it to show his former colleagues what he can do as a head coach. This is a true Monday Night Football game for Ryan.
After leaving for New York in the offseason Ryan criticized his former team for giving number 99 to rookie Paul Kruger. The number was formerly worn by defensive end Michael McCrary. Ryan has since apologized, but if an incident like that meant so much to him, beating his former team likely means even more.
So what does this mean for NFL betting? Ryan's knowledge could very well help rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez. Sanchez will be making his first NFL start. I'm going to take it one step further. If we look at the situation there is a rookie quarterback making his first NFL start facing not only one of the best defences in the NFL, but a defence that takes pride in everything they do. The Raven's defence does not take any challenge lightly, especially one against a former coach.
I don't think we should expect much out of Sanchez in this one. The rookie quarterback already has so much to think about I don't think tips from Ryan on the Raven's defence will be of much benefit.
Ryan isn't the only one making a return to Baltimore. Accompanying Ryan will be linebacker Bart Scott and safety Jim Leonhard. Both players signed with the Jets as free agents during the off season.
Defensive end Terrell Suggs and cornerback Samari Rolle are out indefinitely for the Ravens. Wide receiver Mark Clayton will also miss the game for the Ravens but should be ready next week for Baltimore.
The Jets hold a 3-2 edge in the five preseason matchups between the two teams. Their last meeting in the preseason came in 2002 with the Jets coming out on top 16-14. I think we are in for an even lower score tonight. The Betfair market has the total set at 31.5, I really like the under here. I'm seeing a score around 10-7 for the Ravens. If you can get odds close to [2.0] on the Jets +3.5 take it, it is good value.
There is also some value to be had in the Winning Margin betting market. You can get Baltimore to win by 1-6 points at odds of [4.6].
