MLB Odds: Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees
The Betting Advantage looks at the biggest rivalry in baseball and tries to find the value in the MLB odds.
The Boston Red Sox roll into New York to take on the Yankees this weekend. Both clubs will most likely be in the playoffs as the Yankees have already secured their spot and the Red Sox have an eight game lead on the Texas Rangers for the wild card spot. The Yankees have a magic number of five to clinch the American League East, so they can do so with a sweep of the Red Sox this weekend.
The Red Sox have been playing great as of late winning 12 of their past 15. They are getting good pitching combined with great hitting. They have put up 19 runs in the past two games as Victor Martinez has extended his hit streak to 23 games.
The Red Sox send Jon Lester to the hill for tonight's game. The Red Sox have the last seven games in which Lester has started, with the lefty picking up the win in five of those contests. Lester is pitching with great command as of late as he has gone at least six innings and not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last nine starts. In his career he is 3-0 with a 3.11 ERA in seven starts against the Yankees, including one complete game shutout.
Joba Chamberlain will start for the Yankees tonight. The Yankees are intentionally not allowing Chamberlain to go deep into games in order to rest him for the playoffs. In fact Chamberlain has not gone more than four innings in a game since throwing five complete on August 16th. The former relief pitcher seems to be affected by this. Chamberlain knows going into a game he will not be able to pick up the win as starters must go five innings at minimum to be eligible to earn a win.
Chamberlain's last outing resulted in a 7-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The right hander gave up seven earned runs in three innings of work. Chamberlain's fastball is only hitting low 90s as of late. We are used to seeing his fastball getting up into the high 90s.
I like the Red Sox to take this one with a strong advantage on the mound. Back them for [1.85] on Betfair.
